It’s a source of pride and measurement which many gifted kids take on as a means of superiority because that’s what the system rewards. The real issue i believe is with the way we socialize giftedness. And various other things make up these personas we take on as “gifted” individuals. The way that others respond to the label “gifted” when you’re identified. Ones parents and the pressure they place on them.
If the teachers are certified in gifted education(or not). There’s a combination of the education the school district provides to gifted kids. I know some that were (literally losing hair for getting a B) others that weren’t. I would never describe myself as a perfectionist. I believe this to be dependent on the individual. That’s without a doubt a heavy burden to carry, but it’s up to you to decide whether your “gift” means you owe the world something. There are very few of us and we have the potential to do so much more than what is “normal”. The notion that we are a “waste of potential” if we are less than perfect is another way of asserting that we are precious human capital. We are capable of much more and it’s important to hold us to those higher standards, but it’s also just as important to acknowledge that setbacks are also an inherent part of our lives too. We are indeed loaded with potential, and generally speaking, the world is “ours to lose”. It’s completely normal and not any different for gifted people. It’s important to know that everyone experiences setbacks and even failures throughout their journeys in life. Because our aptitude enables us to see the “bigger picture”, our heightened senses of “justice” often demand it from us. Rather, I believe that our desire for perfectionism stems from our desire to see what we feel is right. I disagree that we are perfectionists because we are pushed to be by others. The gifted education seared it into our minds that if we are anything less than perfect, we are a waste of potential. Eventually all the stress adds up, and becomes overwhelming, leading to burnout. People will mess up, it’s only human, and when we do, it all starts to fall apart. Having to go through high school, when everything feels like the end of the world, with that mindset of “I have to be perfect” would only end in disaster.
This kind of constant pressure is exhausting, and it’s harmful to a kid. That’s why so many gifted people are perfectionists. They hold us to certain standards and if we don’t meet those standards, we feel like failures. They see us as people loaded with potential, destined to become something great. This kind of burnout is common among gifted kids, but why is that? It’s because of the way that teachers and faculty look at gifted kids. My grades started dropping, I wasn’t doing my work, etc. I met those standards up until about halfway through high school. Teachers held me to ridiculously high standards.
